Graphic Designer

Communications and Culture at the City of Sioux Falls is seeking a Graphic Designer to help our team connect, inform, and engage with the community. The team provides strategic communications and operational support to all City departments, and we need a designer to help visualize those efforts with clear, informative, and modern design that aligns with our brand standards.

An ideal candidate for the Graphic Designer position wants to meaningfully contribute to Sioux Falls using their design skills. Job Responsibilities:

1. Create professional and effective graphic solutions using design software such as, but not limited to, Adobe Creative Suite and Canva. Develop graphic concepts, execute design, and determine appropriate layout.

2. Access and utilize stock images and graphics from approved sources for use in both printed and digital space while abiding by Copyright rules and regulations.

3. Proofread deliverables, and provide excellent customer service while maintaining project expectations and deadlines.

4. Perform post-press duties, including cutting with paper cutters and hand tools, laminating, operating folding machine, binding, mounting items on foam core, and assembling and collating items. Operate printers, scanners, copiers, and braille embossing equipment.

5. Create mail merge files for lists, personalized letters, labels, and envelopes.

6. Utilize project management software to track and document project status, accurately record project time worked, and resolve assigned work request in a timely manner.

7. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED certification with a minimum of three (3) years’ post-secondary education and/or experience in word processing, graphic design/graphic arts; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
Supplemental Information:
  • Knowledge of the principles of print shop and print production processes and equipment.

  • Knowledge of graphic design, typography techniques, design trends, color theory.

  • Ability to prioritize user requests in the absence of leadership.

  • Skill in layout design and typography.

  • Ability to graphically portray verbal concepts and use a variety of graphic-related fonts and lettering techniques.

  • Ability to type, format, and proofread accurately and efficiently a wide range of materials, documents, and forms.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), graphic design software (Abode Creative Suite), Canva, and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Knowledge of proper business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • Ability to follow complex directions and meet deadlines under stressful, fast-paced circumstances.

  • Ability to utilize project management software to complete Communications and Culture projects.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and provide excellent customer service.

  • Ability to maintain the quality of work and the confidentiality and integrity of the Communications and Culture team.

  • Ability to perform close visual work.
